Drowning in plastic!

Wed 14 Nov 2018

During Personal Development on Wednesday 7th November, every student from year 7 to 13 watched the BBC documentary ‘Drowning in Plastic’. Tutors also used questions to check comprehension as well as newspaper articles and an educational resource published by the BBC to stimulate discussion, make students aware of yet more situations in which the issues raised in the documentary are relevant, and aid their deeper understanding.

Environmental impact, particularly of plastic, is widely debated currently and the interest has galvanised the sixth form students into forming an Eco Council that can work to protect the school and local environment against the negative impacts of initially single-use plastics and irresponsible waste management. Currently the Eco Council is working on establishing a sustainable systematic programme of plastic recycling and minimising the generation of single-use plastic waste.

Events such as that during personal development last week and the visit of Mark Crutchley from Greenpeace in July will make the student body more aware of their own impact and more engaged in the interventions being championed by the Eco Council.
